The election of the son of Connemara emigrants as Mayor of Boston would be “great for Galway”.

That’s according to NUI Galway law lecturer, political columnist and Boston native Larry Donnelly, who believes that US State Representative Marty J Walsh would attempt to forge links between Boston and Galway should he be elected.

Following the decision by incumbent Mayor Thomas Menino not to seek re-election after 20 years, Massachusetts State Representative Marty Walsh, whose father hailed from Callowfeenish, Carna and mother is from Rosmuc, announced his intention to run for election.

Although Mr Walsh has not yet officially announced his candidacy, he is understood to be a strong candidate, though the full field has not emerged as yet.

“He’s a viable candidate,” said Mr Donnelly, who writes political commentary for Irish-American publication Irish Central as well as lecturing at NUI Galway.

“He’s from Dorchester, which is the biggest neighbourhood in the city. He started off with a really strong union base, but he was also, for instance, a very early supporter of gay marriage so he’d also have strong support in the gay and lesbian community,” he added.

Despite having strong backing from the Irish community and the labour movement, Mr Donnelly said it was “way too early” to determine whether Representative Walsh was a front-runner in the Mayoral race.

“A lot of the middle class families that lived in the city have moved away and a lot of the older residents who would have dominated voting in the municipal elections, they’ve passed away and Boston has a lot of new people. That’s what makes it so hard to assess who’s a viable candidate and who’s not,” he said.

Mr Donnelly said that if Rep. Walsh were elected Mayor of Boston, it would be good news for the thousands of undocumented Irish in the city, as well as for County Galway in general.

“If he were elected Mayor of Boston, I think he would try to push and pursue whatever kind of collaborations and links between Galway and Boston that he could. He would be great for Galway, there’s no doubt about that.”

The 2013 Boston mayoral election will take place on Tuesday, 5 November.
