Galway’s hurlers dominate the shortlist for the 2012 GAA GPA Hurling All-Star awards, released today.
An astonishing 14 Galway hurlers have been nominated for awards, with the Tribesmen receiving the full complement of three nominations in the full back, half back and half forward categories, two in the full forward category and one nomination for goalkeeper James Skehill.
As well as receiving an All-Star nomination, Galway’s talismanic forward Joe Canning has also been nominated for the Hurler of the Year award.Read more…

Joe Canning’s nerves of steel and unerring accuracy may have drawn much of the praise in Galway’s tied All-Ireland final clash with Kilkenny earlier this month, but an equally vital contribution came from Iarla Tannian in midfield, who gave a towering performance in the centre of the park, putting his body on the line on more than one occasion as Galway pitted their strength against the Cats.

As the Galway senior hurling team doctor, Dr Dan Murphy is one of those people you hope you don’t have to call upon, but is a reassuring presence on the sidelines nonetheless.
Dr Murphy, who has a General Practice in Salthill, has been involved with the senior hurling team since the league campaign of 2009, when he was approached by then team manager John McIntyre.

Ticket prices plunge for replay

The game was hardly over when leading Galway officials were in informal discussions with Croke Park officials requesting a reduction in prices for the replay.
