Answering the President’s call

Time and again in his relatively short presidency, Michael D Higgins has called on Irish people to celebrate an Irishness of which to be proud and he will again make the call in ‘Glaoch – The President’s Call’ to be broadcast on St Patrick’s Day on RTÉ. President’ Higgins says that throughout our history, literature, music and art have been a source of great strength, helping us cope with adversity and soothing our losses, while also opening us up to new possibilities of renewal and change and creating joy.

    Turning into the Yahoo! car park a couple of weeks ago, newly appointed CEO and mum of one Marissa Mayer is said to have been shocked by the lack of cars on the premises and swiftly sent a decree to all staff banning all working from home arrangements.

    Anyone attending the opening of the Croí Heart and Stroke Centre in Newcastle in Galway City on a bitterly cold Friday last November will have been struck not just by the facility, but by the huge crowd of supporters that turned up on the day for the launch.

It’s as true for public transport as it is for Government acknowledgements and, in that regard, Minister for Public and Commuter Transport Alan Kelly’s recent admission that he is concerned about the passenger numbers on the Galway to Limerick train service is welcome, albeit behind schedule.

    Do all the crimes that take place in this city get reported to An Garda Siochana? While one would hope so, sometimes the figures just don’t make sense. Galway City Councillors expressed disbelief this week at the slight increase in burglaries in the city last year, saying the number of break-ins were “not adequately reflected” in the figures.

    Rather than robbing a sickly Peter to pay for the care of a chronically ill Paul, the Department of Health must start treating mental health as an equal and should give serious consideration to Macra na Feirme’s call for it to ape the Road Safety Authority’s approach to road deaths to reduce the number of deaths by suicide in this country.

    It says a lot about politics in this country, even a bit about the Irish psyche, that we demand promises from those that put themselves before us for election, criticise them when they fail to deliver and criticise them again when they make a stand against their own party for failing to deliver.

    The sign above the door leading into the infants’ room at the Kidane Mehret Orphanage in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia reads ‘Please smile’, not an easy thing to do when you see the children’s circumstances or you contemplate their future in a country where hunger and poverty are still rife.
