    Dear Editor, Ireland Reaching Out is a new voluntary initiative seeking to identify those who left Ireland, in order to trace them and their descendants worldwide. A team of volunteers is involved in the Irish Government-sponsored project, researching the names of Irish emigrants, contacting them or their descendants and inviting them to Ireland for the Week of Welcomes in South-East Galway from 24 to 30 June.

    Dear Editor, Last June, to great fanfare, Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton officially launched the JobBridge internship programme. The scheme creates six or nine month internships for people currently unemployed, for which they receive €50 per week from the Department of Social Protection on top of their existing welfare entitlement.

    Dear Editor, Recent protests at the Fine Gael Ard-fheis in Dublin and the Labour Party conference in Galway have shown the huge levels of opposition to the agenda of austerity set by the Government. The Fine Gael-Labour coalition have attempted a series of brutal attacks on the ordinary people of Ireland, including the household and septic tank charges, cuts and closures of rural schools, rises in third level fees and closure of nursing homes.
