Galway losing income from motorhome tourists

Letters Posted on 13/03/2013 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, I read with dismay your article titled ‘Campervans banned from Kinvara Pier’ in a recent edition of your newspaper (27/02/13). Phrases such as “significant number” referring to the number of objections from the local community, “prejudicial to public health or the amenities of the locality or would interfere to an unreasonable extent with traffic on any road” and “in the interests of preservation of the amenities of the locality” referring to the presence of motorhomes are probably good sound bites but lacking quantitative content are pretty meaningless.

  • Campervaners will spend money where they are made welcome

Letters Posted on 13/03/2013 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, Campervans on the pier at Kinvara are akin to the arrival of the first swallows: they herald the halcyon days of summer. On many occasion I have stopped over to enjoy a meal in The Pier Head or a pizza in the Full Tide Inn and listened to the best of traditional music over a pint in Connelly’s.

Dear Editor, Writing in the ‘Irish Times’ this week, Enda Kenny says that, "At the core of the Government’s strategy is the creation of jobs for our people.".  According to the Central Statistics Office, since FG/Labour got into power in March 2011, the labour force has fallen from 2,178,700 (Apr.

Letters Posted on 27/02/2013 by Staff reporter
A chara, As we know from the former British Labour leader Harold Wilson, a week in politics is a long time. But when is Eamon Gilmore going to coin a similar phrase to encapsulate his party’s political somersault since it made the short walk from the opposition to the government benches? In May 2010, the Labour Party’s Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Michael D Higgins, with the clear approval of his party leader, spoke out against the presence of Irish military personnel in Afghanistan: “In the interests of the Irish Defence Force’s well-deserved international reputation…it is incumbent upon our government that Ireland act with credibility and

  • Legally dubious motion could be challenged

Letters Posted on 27/02/2013 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, The motion to deal with ‘unruly” councillors passed at Galway City Council on Monday 11 February could hit a legal brick wall. This is due to the fact that councillors’ remuneration (pay) is paid for representational work.

  • It was business as usual for Pope Benedict

Letters Posted on 20/02/2013 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, In last week's paper, you ran an article about the resignation of Pope Benedict. The article contained a number of quotes from the bishop of Galway, Martin Drennan about how fantastic Benedict's reign has been as well as a couple of others, like our President and then went on to speculate on Benedict’s successor.

  • Nobody saying abortion cures suicide

Letters Posted on 20/02/2013 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, In last week’s issue (Wednesday 13 February), Mary O’Byrne repeated the mantra of anti-choice campaigners that: ‘abortion is never the appropriate treatment for suicidality’.

  • Abortion not appropriate treatment for suicidality

Letters Posted on 13/02/2013 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, The publication of the report on the public hearings on abortion of the Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children makes interesting reading. The submission of St Patrick's University Hospital, Dublin 8, states that 'mental health professions are not able to predict suicide and there is no test or clinical assessment which is either valid or reliable in this area'.

  • Great expectations

Letters Posted on 13/02/2013 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, The word great is bandied around so much in sport these days that it is in danger of becoming meaningless. During the course of this year’s inaugural Grand Slam in Australia one critic opined that the top four players in the world - Djokovic, Federer, Murray and the injured Nadal - were the four greatest tennis players in the history of the game.

Dear Editor, I refer to the letter from the Socialist Workers Party (Galway Independent, Wednesday 23 January), which called for a woman's right to choose (abortion) to be enshrined in Irish law. This would be a regressive step for Ireland, and would violate the most basic human right: the right to life, of unborn babies and their mothers.
