President should go to Shannon to underline commitment to peace

Letters Posted on 07/11/2012 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, So, the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, held a lecture in Belfast about sustaining the “peace process” by rooting out “hatred in our midst”. At the same time, the Irish State is an accomplice in wars and bloody conflict in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq. The US troops, the killer drones and other deadly weaponry that travel freely through Shannon Airport are the very antithesis of peace and cause hatred in the world.

Letters Posted on 07/11/2012 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, I was appalled to read the article in the Irish Independent last Saturday, which reported that the IFPA and various other counselling agencies are giving out abortion advice that could have put women’s lives at risk.

  • People with disabilities say ‘no’ to cuts

Letters Posted on 07/11/2012 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, The proposed drastic cuts identified by the Government in the last few months raises deep and utter concern and anger among many people in our society. If these cuts are implemented, they will have a devastating effect on the disadvantaged groups in our community, such as travellers, people with disabilities, the elderly, homeless people and other ethnic minority groups.

Dear Editor,   The final outcome for Galway asylum seekers in Lisbrook House is that Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, has agreed that, due to cut backs and less people seeking asylum, the closure will continue and be completed by mid to end November.

Dear Editor, I write regarding your article ‘Inside/Out’, which appeared in the Galway Independent on Wednesday 17 October.   Reading about the sad life of the rural public publican, I started to wonder about certain experiences I've had.

  • Beautiful day marred by those that litter

Letters Posted on 24/10/2012 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor,   I have lived in Galway for over one year now and, having lived in a number of diverse places on this planet, I can say that Galway ranks very close to the top of my list.   Beautiful scenery and life loving people; great craic and fine musicians; the spirit within, that of the storyteller or the history maker; smiles and a real welcome.

Dear Editor, I want to bring to attention one word in a letter to the editor (17/09/12) that struck me.  It wasn’t the topic or a particular statement made rather just one nine-letter word.

  • We must make an organised stand on septic tank issue

Letters Posted on 10/10/2012 by Pádraic Ó Conghaile
A chara, Is it not highly significant that in all of the media comments on the registration of septic tanks very few commentators explained why a huge number of people refused to register?   The reason is simple: they regard it as a question of fairness, i.

  • Abortion is ultimate form of child abuse

Letters Posted on 10/10/2012 by Dr Eimear Tierney
Madam, It is quite ironic that, as we approach a referendum on children’s rights, Ms Sarah Mc Carthy (Letter to the Editor 26-09-12) is promoting abortion.   It is nothing short of appalling that, as we launch into a debate on how best to protect our children from child abuse and similar dangers, abortion is discussed as though it is harmless and indeed something which should be promoted.

  • Abortion pictures are not graphic

Letters Posted on 10/10/2012 by Maria Mahoney
A chara, The misinformation in Sarah McCarthy’s letter (26-09-12) is typical of abortion campaigners. To set the facts straight, the written caption to the current pro-life billboards ‘Abortion tears her life apart’ was inspired by the words of a woman who had an abortion and was describing the impact it had on her.

  • Heartening that councillors taking stand on Comerford House

Letters Posted on 03/10/2012 by Staff reporter
Dear Editor, My heartfelt congratulations to Galway City's councillors for taking a unanimous stand in favour of the use of Comerford House as a cultural resource. In our presentation to City Hall a few years ago, the Western Writers' Centre - Ionad Scríbhneoirí Chaitlín Maude - cited Comerford House as a premises in which we might develop, under our aegis:   ►A modest library and museum commemorating Galway's literary heritage in Irish and English;   ►A reception area and small office; ►A reading and lecture space.
