A love of the water as well as an interest in technology led Paddy into the field of marine electronics and communications. Now working with P&O Maritime Services, who are responsible for the technical management of Ireland’s national research vessels, he has the unique job of controlling the high tech vehicle the ROV Holland 1.

  • Local lifeboats launch 24 times over summer

    Galway RNLI lifeboats launched 24 times during the summer months, new figures from the charity have shown. This summer, the three RNLI lifeboat stations in Galway launched 24 times with Aran Islands lifeboat launching 12 times and Galway RNLI launching ten times.

  • Sub-Aqua Club celebrates 50 years

    In the year of its 50th anniversary, the NUIG/GMIT Sub-Aqua Club officially launched its new Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB), Alice Perry, at a special ceremony in NUI Galway recently. Work began on raising funds to purchase a new offshore class RIB for the club in 2009, to allow greater access to some of the offshore dive sites that lie around Ireland.

    Three Team Riders from Rusheen Bay Windsurfing School made the 46.5km journey from Kilronan Pier on Inis Mor to Blackrock in Salthill recently. A distance normally associated with a motorised or sailing craft, the team comprising of Daniel King, Maurice Owens and Danny Mulryan made the trip on Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs).

    The Irish Fly Fair and International Angling Show is making its way to the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill this November. The show, which will take place from 10am to 5pm on the 10 and 11 November, will feature a range of exhibitors from all parts of the angling world including over 60 of the world’s greatest fly tyers, who will display their unique skills and craft.

    The eighth race of the Late Summer series took place on Tuesday 4 September, with conditions good and accompanied by sunshine and a reasonable northeasterly breeze. In competition, there were seven Dart 16’s, an FX1 and a Hobie Tiger and three monohulls.
