The economics of Netflix

Most of you have probably heard of the online video-streaming website, Netflix. Some of you may have watched the highly-rated US adaptation of the BBC television series ‘House of Cards’ (starring Kevin Spacey) on the site in recent weeks. Netflix commissioned this big-budget operation (it is rumoured to have cost $100 million for 26 episodes) to air exclusively on its own website. The company’s CEO Reid Hastings has promised at least five similar shows per year.
