Major fisheries conference for Galway

Galway is to host a major conference on aquatic invasive species next month.  The Freshwater Invasives Networking for Strategy (FINS) Conference will be held in the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill from 9 to 11 April and will be hosted jointly by Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Advisory Commission (EIFAAC).   The prime objective of the conference is to provide a forum where national and international invasive species experts and policy makers can meet, listen to invited experts from arou

  • Snooker event hailed as major success for Galway

That’s according to organiser Shay McNelis, who said that Galway was the “clear winner” as Chinese snooker ace Ding Junhui lifted the top prize at the PTC Grand Finals at NUI Galway on Sunday night.

East Galway Deputy Paul Connaughton has highlighted that a recent change in European law has resulted in many Irish residents being eligible for a £300 annual fuel payment.

  • HSE West mental health review in final stages

    HSE West has confirmed that a review of mental health services in Galway and Roscommon is in its final stages and a report is expected to be published in the next three months. Minister of State for Health Sean Sherlock made the admission during a debate in the Dáil on Thursday evening, after Galway Deputy Paul Connaughton raised the ongoing issue of Toghermore House in Ballinasloe.

    Tribes and tribesmen will feature prominently in this year’s Galway City St Patrick’s Day parade, which kicks off at 11.30am today. The Tribesmen of the All-Ireland winning Galway senior hurling teams of 1987 and 1988 will be the guests of honour for the city parade, which celebrates its 110th anniversary this year.

    RailwayLineOranmore9013_1.jpg Senior management at Iarnród Éireann have undertaken to try and avoid the delays that have affected Church Street in Athenry over the past week.  Following a number of complaints about unusually long delays at the railway level crossing on Church Street, Galway East TD and Minister of State at the Department of Education and Skills, Ciaran Cannon contacted Iarnród Éireann seeking an explanation for the delays.

  • €500,000 refurbishment for Ballinasloe mental health ward

    HSE West has announced the completion of a €500,000 refurbishment of St Luke's Ward at St Brigid's Hospital in Ballinasloe. Patients from St Dympna's ward have now been moved into the new upgraded ward on a temporary basis to facilitate further refurbishment on this ward, with the overall project due to be completed by the end of June.

    Serious concerns have been raised over a “massive underspend” of funding allocated to a rural development programme. In response to questions from Galway Deputy Eamon Ó Cuív in the Dáil this week, Environment Minister Phil Hogan confirmed that less than a third of the money provided under the Leader Programme has been spent to date.

It was announced earlier this week that the Government plan’s to tackle mortgage arrears by putting new legislation, structures and processes in place, including targets for the six main banks that will see a proposed sustainable solution in place for 20 per cent of mortgage customers who have been in arrears for 90 days or more by the end of June.
