Nowhere to Hyde for Galway

P1LEADGalwayvRoss_1.jpg Tribesmen facing difficult championship opener against Roscommon Alan Mulholland will be targeting his first championship win as Galway senior manager when he takes his side to Hyde Park to face Roscommon on Sunday (4pm). The numbers stack up in Galway's favour: just one championship defeat to Roscommon in the last 21 years and that one arrived in the 2001 Connacht quarter-final and was reversed later than year in the All-Ireland series on the way to Galway's last All-Ireland title.

It has been a difficult two years for the Caltra clubman, with breakdowns following comebacks barely before he had broken in his boots.

    Mayo 4-17 Galway 2-7 Cora Staunton destroyed Galway and denied them an immediate return to the top flight after the Division 2 Bord Gáis Energy league final at Parnell Park on Saturday. The Carnacon starlet kicked 2-11 as Mayo, who were reduced to 14 players when skipper Claire Egan picked up a second sin binning in the 39th minute, cantered to the title.

  • Clarinbridge crash out of hurling championship

    Clarinbridge, All-Ireland club champions twelve months ago, have been surprisingly knocked of the Galway SHC as they fell victim to a new structure in the championship. This year Galway introduced a new system with a knockout series of matches before going into a group formation and the 2011 All-Ireland champions were sent packing when they went down by 1-14 to 1-9 to Mullagh.

  • Connacht retain junior inter-pro title

    Munster 9 Connacht 13 Connacht completed the Grand slam and retained their junior inter-provincial title with with victory over Munster at Castleisland. In the winner-takes-all duel Connacht went into the tie trailing their hosts by one point, but Our Lady's Boys Club's Greg Faherty grabbed the deceive try to clinch the title for Connacht.

    SD Galway 2 Limerick FC 5 Limerick FC showed why they are many people's favourites to top the first division when they ruthlessly picked apart SD Galway at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night. Despite the home side taking the lead through Luke McConnell in the 15th minute, Limerick's class came to the fore as Stephen Bradley and James McGrath strikes before the half-hour mark put them in the ascendancy.

Anthony Cunningham utilised a staggering 21 of last year's All-Ireland winning U-21 panel throughout the 70 minutes, but it was one of the elder statesmen, Joe Canning, that proved the inspiration.

    Portumna will have to cope without Galway senior midfielder Andy Smith for their Galway SHC round two tie against Ardrahan in Athenry on Saturday (5pm). Smith was sent-off in Portumna's defeat to Sarsfields two weekend's ago and subsequently picked up an eight-week suspension, which will rule him out of much of Portumna's championship campaign.
