Kilcolgan’s Michael Moran has been crowned European Oyster Opening Champion for the third time. Moran successfully competed against competitors from all across Europe in Trollhattan, near Gothenburg, Sweden at the weekend.

Mr Moran adds this title to his accolades from the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, where he was also crowned national oyster opening champion last year.

He said this week that he sees the European championship as a very good training ground in preparation for the autumn competitions of the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, which runs from 28 to 30 September.

At this year’s festival, Mr Moran will again seek to win the Irish national oyster opening title in order to compete for the World Oyster Opening Championship.

“I always look forward to the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival in September, as there is nothing more fulfilling than competing on home turf with our amazing native oysters, which are the best in the world. It’s always a very high standard of competition in Galway,” he said.

The oyster season will shortly come to a close in April but preparations for the next season and the world-renowned Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival are well underway.

From 28 to 30 September, Galway City will come alive with seafood and oysters as it celebrates the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival, the most internationally recognised food festival in Ireland and the world's longest running international oyster festival.
