Galway County Councillor Seán Canney has requested that the National Roads Authority (NRA) provide sufficient funding to replace the kerbs and footpaths on the N17 on the approach to Tuam.

Following the completion of the water distribution and drainage project known locally as the ‘Big Dig’, the N17 will be re-surfaced but the NRA have not provided sufficient funding to replace the kerbs and footpaths, according to Cllr Canney. “Instead we will have a patching of the existing footpath,” he said.

Adding that the approach road should create a positive first impression of Tuam, Cllr Canney said the NRA have left Galway County Council short by €750,000 in their allocation for the works.

“Therefore we will not get the footpaths replaced,” he said. “The public lighting should also be extended to the outer speed limits as a safety measure. It is a pity that common sense does not prevail in this case,” concluded Cllr Canney.
