With the high street rife with sales at this time of year it can be tempting to splurge on bargains. However, if you’re buying something in the wrong size or without an occasion to wear it, it’s really just a waste of money, despite the 50 per cent off price tag. This year make it your mission to buy smart in the sales.

The first step to smart sale shopping is buying transitional or timeless pieces.

Leather and denim are going to remain on the rails next season so keep an eye out for discounted denim shirts, jackets and shorts in the sales. The same applies to leather. Skirts, shorts and jackets are always going to look chic so if you can snap some up at a fraction of the usual price then go for it.

Many stores include old summer stock in their winter sales so look out for cute pastel sweaters and cigarette trousers that you can incorporate into your transitional wardrobe over the coming months.

Buying classic pieces can be difficult during sale time as glitzier pieces may catch your eye among the sensible coats and blouses. But if you are lucky enough to pick up a great timeless dress or the perfect white shirt it will be worth the restraint elsewhere.

Also remember to avoid going down a size in clothes at all costs. But if you find an item you really love, going up a size or two can be a good idea as tailoring on most items doesn’t cost too much.

However the number one rule for sales is don’t buy for the sake of it! Take a minute to decide how or where you would wear it and whether it is worth the money.

Happy shopping!
